TMC Team Invitational Results

January 10th and 11th was the fist TeachMeChess.com Team Invitational, and it went great!  We played with teams of four at a time control of 30/90 SD 30.  Birmingham, Montgomery, Mobile, Huntsville, Dothan, Baldwin County, and Pensacola all put together teams and competed.  The playing field was tough with a mixture of experts and A's at the top of the teams, and primarily strong B's and C's on the lower boards, with a few A's and D's down there as well.

We had some amazing team upsets, and some amazing individual upsets.  Jake Moody, a 1364 on board 3 for Mobile, defeated Tim Bond, a 1922 on Dothan's third board!  That was by far one of the greatest upsets of the event!  Even more impressive, however, was Scott Enstrom's performance as board 4 for Baldwin County.  While the Baldwin County team didn't do so well, Scott Enstrom, an 888 student of mine, went undefeated with three wins, two draws against significantly higher rated opponents!  His rating increased from 888 to 1149!!!

Board one for Birmingham, Steve Smith, near his floor of 1800 showed he still has good games in him when he drew the highest rated individual in the event Scott Varagona of Auburn.  Of course we can't forget Mobile managing a team draw against Dothan, a team with an average rating more than 300 points higher!

Scott Varagona deserves some special recognition for having 4 wins 1 draw!  Great job Scott, a true performance of a multi-year state champion.

It was an excellent weekend filled with great games.  You can view the USCF crosstable at http://www.uschess.org/msa/XtblMain.php?200901113021.
