2008.08.04.

We (Matt Bingham and I) are currently working on building a www.teachmechess.com/scholastics // scholastics.teachmechess.com that will be an entire other website with different template and content.  The 2008-2009 scholastic chess league is coming up soon and we want it to be better advertised and better organized this year.  We expect this website to be finished before September.

2008.06.29.

Yesterday was the 2008 Louisiana G/30 Championship 5SS, and an Alabaman won it!  we took a crew over from Mobile that included expert Brent Inman who took clear first with 4.5 points, just like he did last month in the ACF Inc. Grand Prix.  I had a terrible tournament, however, with only 3 points missing the 4 by getting one-move mated by a 1500 while up a knight.  The tournament was pretty well run, only a bit of a late start on round 2.  The facility was very nice--plent of parking, comforatble chairs and suitable tables, better than average lighting, and a really nice location next to eating places and gas stations as well as the west intersecting point of I10 and I12.

Thanks to Adam Caveny and Cajun Chess for a well run tournament.

For those of you who don't know, Cajun Chess is an organization based out of New Orleans with tournamnets all throughout Louisiana and Texas.  They will be running the US Class Championship this July.  I've attended a few of their tournaments and all have been extremely high quality, however usually a low percentage payout (e.g. this weekend's tournament was a 66% payout...ACF Inc. never sanctions an event under 75% and I've never run under 78%) while being based on a very high number of participants (e.g. 100 or 200).  Again though, these events are typically very high quality at excellent locations.  In spite of the low percentage payout, I highly suggest you check out a Cajun Chess tournament even if it is a long drive to Houston.

You can calculate the percent payout of a tournament by using the formula of total cash payout / (Pre-reg fee x based on number).
